Welcome to Spotted on the Socials, your weekly round-up of the sport and media moments everyone’s liking, sharing and talking about!

To kick things off, here are this week’s Spotted on the Socials.

I’m sorry, WHAT?

The first ‘spot’ certainly got my attention this week.

I came across a post by @amysfoundationau on Instagram, which called out a post by Country Trucker Caps (@countrytruckercaps), a company that sells, well, trucker caps.

“Life’s too short for a shit hat” is Country Trucker Caps’ slogan on Instagram. Hmm … I’d say this one might be in the “shit” category.

I love trucker caps – they’re fun, they fit, and they look good.

I’ve raced in my fair share of trucker caps, too!

And for the most part, Country Trucker Caps appears to be doing some good work in the community – they even sell a cap supporting autism awareness. Awesome!

But, as Amy’s Foundation has pointed out, promoting hate through the sale of a cap with the slogan, “F**k Cyclists” (which also features in a reel on their Instagram), is neither clever nor constructive, and certainly doesn’t advance any meaningful community cause.

Although I’m not sure this is available for purchase anymore – perhaps following the call out? – as it doesn’t appear to come up when you search for it on their website!

I loved Amy’s Foundation’s response – they didn’t just call it out; they flipped the script, “redesigning” the cap with a better slogan: “F**king love cyclists”.

“This isn’t about offence. It’s about safety and harm,” Amy’s Foundation reportedly said in an email sent to Country Trucker Caps.

“Cyclists are people, partners, children and friends.

“You are still selling this hat, do the right thing, remove it from your product range.

“Hate isn’t humour. It fuels hostility toward people who already face risk on our roads.

“Every cyclist deserves to come home safely,” they said.

Bravo, Amy’s Foundation and good on you, Country Trucker Caps, for (hopefully) removing this cap from sale.

We don’t need more hate in this world! It’s not funny.

Track night but cheekier

The second ‘spot’ is one that I also came across on Instagram via a post by Tempo Journal.

It’s a new women-only track night in Australia, launched by Cheeky Run Club – ‘Cheeky Track Night.

“Fun, fast and female.”

Think: track nights but better – re-imagined, more accessible, fun and team based.

Want to shake up your speed work? Curious about trying a track event but feel a bit intimidated? Love fun runs but find yourself defaulting to halves and marathons?

Well, this is something that might be for you!

It’s basically a track night – or a 5km race on the track – particularly for women who haven’t raced track before.

“Traditional track races are hard to find and are almost always targeted towards a very experienced runner,” said the team behind Cheeky Run Club.

“It goes without saying, they’re also generally very male-dominated; there will either be 5 male races for every 1 female race or you’re lining up against 20 men and 1 other women.

“It truly doesn’t feel like there is a space for amateur runners – particularly women – in the track world.

“This made us think: how could we do things differently?”

They’re calling on women of all running abilities who want to shake up their speed training and give track night a try.
